  • Pasco officials announced that Memorial Pool Dome will open on January 28 at 1:30 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and free community swim until 3 p.m. The $2 million project will offer year-round swimming and expanded programs + opportunities for residents.  Apple Valley News Now

  • The Rite Aid at 1549 George Washington Way near Jefferson Elementary is sparking ideas, with some suggesting a new owner (CVS, Trader Joe’s or a specialty market) could boost the area. Meanwhile, a former Rite Aid on 20th Avenue in Pasco will host Ross Dress for Less in 2026.  KFLD
  • Local residents are weighing options for the vacant Rite Aid at 1549 George Washington Way near Jefferson Elementary, with ideas such as CVS, Trader Joe's or a small grocery store; meanwhile, the former Pasco Rite Aid on 20th Ave will reopen as Ross Dress for Less later this year.  610 KONA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Columbia Basin College in Pasco will hold an MLK Day celebration on Monday, Jan. 19 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. between the H and T Buildings, where CBC will present the Spirit Award and ring a bell 39 times in honor of Dr. King and its historic statue.  NBC Tri-Cities

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tri-Tech Skills Center in Kennewick received a $2,500 grant from AgWest Farm Credit to boost hands-on EMS and firefighting training for high school juniors and seniors. The funding will support wildland firefighting exercises and buy new equipment including a chainsaw + portable pump for practical field training.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Hanford High School student Everett Breitkreitz won first place in the beginner short film category at a national competition, impressing teacher Cheyenne LaViolette with his film inspired by popular comedies (Superbad and The Hangover) as he celebrated the rewarding win after overcoming initial doubts.  NBC Tri-Cities

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • WSU Tri-Cities is leading a multi-million dollar project backed by $20M in state + private funds to boost sustainable aviation fuel production. The university’s SOAR lab is partnering with experts to test drop-in fuels for existing aircraft, with production scaling up around 2030.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Water flows on Bateman Island’s south side for the first time in 85 years after contractors removed part of the causeway early this year (a project led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with local partners to restore salmon migration); work is expected to finish by March 1st.  NBC Tri-Cities

  • The Tri-Cities Animal Shelter in Pasco now has Murray, a smart, energetic mixed-breed dog found on N. Elm Ave available for adoption today; he loves treats + needs regular exercise to stay active.  610 KONA

  • Habitat for Humanity Tri-County Partners is building 25 affordable housing units in Richland, West Richland & Walla Walla to help families challenged by high rents.
