CRIME NEWS

  • A 20-year-old man was arrested on DUI and hit-and-run charges after police stopped him driving a damaged Toyota Camry without front tires near W Canal Dr — the car sparked on the road after a hit-and-run at Columbia Park on March 17th.  610 KONA
  • Two wrongful death lawsuits have been filed for DUI-related crashes on March 1 in Richland, with one claim that impaired driver Matthew D. Mason crossed the center line and struck Antonio Aguirre and another alleging that off-duty trooper Sarah Clasen failed to yield and hit Jhoser Enmanuel Vega-Sanchez’s motorcycle, sparking protests for accountability.  NBC Tri-Cities

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three education opportunity bills—passed unanimously—moved out of their chambers today in Olympia to expand student options statewide; one bill removes the age limit for tuition waivers while another allows GED recipients to get college-bound scholarships, and a third supports 16- and 17-year-old CTE students. Legislators from Kennewick in the 8th District—led by Sen. Boehnke and Rep. Connors—sponsored the measures, and the CTE bill is set for a hearing on April 19th.  KFLD
  • The Finley FFA Food For Thought program runs from April 7 to May 30 at River View High School to provide students with healthy snacks during class breaks—each student can take one item to help reduce food insecurity. Funded by a $1,200 'Living to Serve' Grant from the National FFA Organization, the program aims to support better focus and learning on campus.  610 KONA
  • A unique exchange program linking the Tri-Cities with Japanese universities continues to share lessons from the nuclear history through a fifteen-lecture series and student exchanges, connecting local institutions with partners abroad. The initiative began in 2023 and uses discussions of Hanford’s cleanup and Fukushima’s 2011 disaster to encourage future clean energy projects—bridging education with international collaboration.  FOX 41 Yakima

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The UCLA Voting Rights Project sent a letter to the Port of Pasco claiming its at‑large voting system weakens Latino voting power; the letter noted Latino voters (41.8% of eligible voters) have not won a Port Commission seat in over twenty years and the port will have (90 days) to respond.  NBC Tri-Cities
