Good morning, Pasco. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 1st of April.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out at a large chicken coop on March 30 in the 1200 block of South 4th Ave and firefighters controlled the blaze within five minutes — they ventilated the home so residents could return despite exterior damage, with one firefighter treated for a minor injury and several chickens dying while officials investigate the cause.  FOX 41 Yakima

CRIME NEWS

  • On March 1, off-duty WSP trooper Sarah Clasen was involved in a fatal crash in Richland that killed 20-year-old Jhoser Sanchez—records show she spent over four hours at Moon Palace Restaurant before picking up a pizza from Domino’s moments before the crash and later tested with a blood alcohol level over twice the legal limit, and she has not been charged yet.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Franklin County deputies are seeking help to identify suspects seen on video near Connell who stole a rifle and prowled several vehicles between 12:45 and 1 AM on March 18th—authorities say the suspects are believed to be teens or young males.  610 KONA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Yakima River near Benton City was observed to be a bit high while water managers work to keep it below flood stage. Residents in low-lying areas should avoid the banks (to lessen erosion risks) and follow Emergency Alerts (to get updates on any changes).  KFLD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Torres from Pasco announced on March 31 that she secured over $136M in the state capital budget for projects across the 15th District—funds that will upgrade the Selah wastewater system, improve irrigation, boost school security and enhance community services.  FOX 41 Yakima
  • The U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Field Office and the Washington State Department of Ecology are inviting community members to a virtual meeting on April 30 at 5:30 p.m. to learn about a proposed waste facility at the Hanford Site's Central Waste Complex that will process various waste including contact-handled transuranic waste—community members will have a chance to provide comments later during the permit modification process.  FOX 41 Yakima
  • On Sunday, a local driver noted a Pasco minivan using two donut tires even though such emergency tires are meant for temporary use and are recommended for only up to (70 miles) at speeds below (50 mph). Research shows no Washington law sets a specific time limit for using a donut tire, so drivers are advised to replace them as soon as possible.  610 KONA
  • Ballots for a Finley special election will be mailed on Wednesday, April 2 for Finley school district voters after two measures failed in February to approve a replacement educational programs and operations levy. Voters must return ballots by 8 p.m. on April 22 at one of six drop-off boxes at Prosser Courthouse, Kennewick City Hall, Finley Middle School, Benton County Election Center, Benton County Campus and Rivers Edge Plaza.  Apple Valley News Now

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The City of Pasco began the first phase of a housing development project near Burns Road and Convention Drive by constructing nearly 600 homes between Road 60 and Convention Drive; detours and road closures remain in effect until April 4 to ensure driver and worker safety. Casey DeVoir (a construction inspector) said crews are installing water, sewer and irrigation systems now and a second phase linked to the new Sageview High School will cause additional closures next month.  Apple Valley News Now
