CRIME NEWS
- ➤ During Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Kennewick Police Department announced it will begin emphasis and spotter patrols this week to stop drivers holding phones—cell phone use accounts for 70 percent of the distracted driving violations they see, and distractions have led to 30 percent of fatal collisions statewide. The initiative comes in partnership with the Washington Traffic Safety Commission and Target Zero Program. KEPR
- ➤ Officers from Richland and Kennewick police are investigating at Fire Station 72 after a possible shooting led to one person being detained and another taken in handcuffs, while the right lane on eastbound Keene Avenue is blocked and a white car is being towed. Apple Valley News Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Pasco School District is offering a one year fully paid Special Education teacher residency in a partnership with the Washington Education Association and Pasco Association of Educators for PSD staff, community members and anyone with a bachelor’s degree. The program gives a salary, benefits, mentorship and classroom experience with information nights on April 22, June 4 and Aug. 28, accepts applications from April 15 until Sept. 15 and promises a conditional job offer with a start on the BA + 90 salary scale. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Residents of Washington can now apply for instant E-bike rebates of $300 or $1,200 through the WSDOT WE-Bike Program, with the higher rebate for households at or below 80% of the median income. Applicants must submit their information online by noon on April 23 and use their rebate within 45 days or by June 30. KFLD
- ➤ The Benton Rural Electric Association received a $3 million grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce on April 9 to replace aging equipment and reduce wildfire risks in its service area. The upgrades, spanning 1,800 miles of power lines—designed to cut outage troubleshooting time—are under review by the U.S. Department of Energy. KEPR
- ➤ The WA UTC will hold a May 9 hearing to decide fines for Prieto Landscaping after officials found the company illegally collected and disposed of construction debris in September and October last year on East A street in Pasco. The UTC recorded 147 violations — recommending $1,000 per offense — and the hearing will determine further enforcement actions. 610 KONA
