  • Canyon Lakes Golf Course will get multimillion-dollar upgrades led by its owners — a group that began operating the course eight months ago — with plans that include moving Golf Universe from Edison Avenue to the course, adding 50 parking spots by demolishing the old cart barn for an underground garage, and expanding the restaurant. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dr. Steven Ashby, director of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, announced he will step down after a decade of leadership—he managed a $1.6 billion research budget and 6,400 employees since 2015—and will serve as senior vice president of Strategic Partnerships at Battelle while a national search for his successor takes four to eight months.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • This year marks the 25th anniversary of the EEOICPA program that helps DOE workers from Hanford pay for health care after exposure to harmful substances — a process that can be hard to navigate because of complex paperwork and few doctors. Local clinics and home health agencies in the Tri-Cities are working to help patients apply for the white card and get needed treatment.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business
  • Hanford launched an internal AI tool called HAL that condenses emails and summarizes technical documents to reduce repetitive tasks, with early estimates showing workers save up to an hour weekly; developers plan to upgrade HAL by linking it to Bing and integrating site-specific databases — it remains isolated from external networks for security. This new tool is based on GPT-4 and was quickly developed and expanded since its pilot rollout in October 2024.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business
  • Mid-February firings of 14 DOE probationary workers and changes in travel and resignation policies stirred concern as cleanup work at Hanford continued with teams draining tanks and finishing waste vitrification.
