- ➤ Pasco officials announced that a new downtown parklet will be unveiled tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. outside Pasco Specialty Kitchen using American Rescue Plan funds + later at 7:00 p.m. residents will gather at the Street Sports Complex at 2200 East A Street to see new field lights and plans for more improvements. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ High school students in Kennewick School District have grown flowers and vegetables and will sell them at plant sales to support their schools’ agricultural programs; the sales will be held at Kamiakin High School (April 24 to 26), Kennewick High School (April 25 to 26) and Southridge High School (May 2 to 3). ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Local elementary students will release salmon into the Columbia River at Columbia Park during the annual Salmon Summit scheduled for April 29 and 30 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.—about 3,200 students will learn the salmon life cycle through hands-on environmental stewardship. Temporary closures at the East Boat Launch and part of Paul Parrish Drive have been implemented by the City of Kennewick Parks and Recreation Department to ensure safety on both days. NBC Tri-Cities

- ➤ The Franklin County commissioners are meeting today at 9 a.m. to consider a resolution that shifts control of the county jail from the sheriff's office to a new corrections department, while Sheriff Jim Raymond warned that the change could compromise jail safety—risking jobs and increasing taxpayer costs. - ➤ The Washington State Attorney General’s Office ordered King Fuji Ranch on April 22 to change its hiring practices and pay a $180,000 penalty after an investigation found that between 2016 and 2019 the ranch misrepresented job requirements to local farmworkers while favoring H-2A workers from Mexico. The resolution filed in Benton County Superior Court requires the ranch to adopt a nondiscrimination policy (including a five-year training program for employees) to protect local workers. - ➤ Pasco City Councilmember Leo Perales earned the Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership from the Association of Washington Cities on April 22+ the certificate recognizes his dedication to key areas such as legal roles, resource management, community planning, leadership, and equity. He said he is eager to use his new skills to improve city policies and quality of life in Pasco+ his achievement underscores his commitment to local initiatives. FOX 41 Yakima
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Two studies on April 22nd found that children's mattresses released high levels of hazardous chemicals such as phthalates and flame retardants, with emissions increasing when warmed by a child's body. Researchers say these chemicals, linked to brain development issues, were most concentrated around the beds in tested bedrooms. FOX 41 Yakima
- ➤ A Johns Hopkins study found that seniors with cancer benefit from immunotherapy as much as younger patients & researchers noted differences in immune responses that may guide better treatment plans. The study tested about 100 patients, with half aged 65 or older, and will help shape future therapies tailored to patient age. FOX 41 Yakima
