GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At John Dam Plaza on April 24, dozens including hospital workers and caretakers gathered to urge Rep. Dan Newhouse to protect Medicaid using a petition with over 500 signers suspended by balloons—Central Washington Families Coalition organized the rally.  FOX 41 Yakima
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has listed five dams in Washington as most at risk of bursting—this listing shows that many state dams face serious safety risks for local communities.  KFLD
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Walla Walla District announced that several recreation areas are closed and services such as maintenance, landscaping, trash collection, and cleaning are reduced until further notice—staff are focusing on priority sites to keep visitors safe.   • The Franklin County Department of Corrections was created 24 hours ago under Director Keilen Harmon after county commissioners voted to remove control of the jail from the sheriff's office—Sheriff Jim Raymond refused to give up courthouse security, prompting an injunction filing and leading county officials to consult with attorneys for next steps.  KEPR

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study by the American Cancer Society showed that screening for breast and colon cancers rebounded after pandemic declines—cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination rates remained low. Experts warned that possible cuts to federal health funding could reverse progress—raising concerns over future cancer prevention efforts.  FOX 41 Yakima

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In March, 271 homes were sold in the Tri-Cities—its lowest count for that month since 2022—even though 730 homes were sold in the first quarter, the highest quarterly total since 2022. The average sale price fell to $479,500 and the median dropped to $430,600 while over 800 active listings and longer market times signaled a cooling demand.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business
