COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new 3,400 sqft youth center opens this Saturday at 1828 W Lewis St to offer workshops, mentorship, games, and computer access for boys ages 8 to 17. It operates weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with after-school and summer programs (fees are $100 per quarter with sponsorships available).  Apple Valley News Now
  • Friends of Mid-Columbia Libraries will host its semi-annual Spring Book Sale in Kennewick, offering donated books + supporting local library programs.  Apple Valley News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire in a four-unit apartment building on West 14th Avenue in Kennewick forced all residents to evacuate late Tuesday night as firefighters controlled the blaze around 10:30 p.m. (no injuries were reported) and relatives provided temporary shelter while repairs are planned.  Apple Valley News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fifth grade teacher Jilly Morris at Badger Canyon Elementary School in Richland was nominated by her student Cora Nelson to receive April's Classroom Makeover from WaFd Bank, a program that honors educators for their dedication — a recognition that spotlights her lasting influence on students.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • WSU Tri-Cities will honor over 330 graduates in a commencement ceremony at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 10 at the Toyota Center in Kennewick, with doors opening at noon.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Pasco School District renewed its EP&O levy as voters approved it with 58.46% (7,485 votes) Tuesday night. Election officials will count the remaining ballots by 6 p.m. today to confirm the measure that will generate about $35 million annually to maintain school programs.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 27, the VA chose the Plaza Way site in Kennewick for a planned 130,000 sqft outpatient clinic to expand veteran care across the Tri-Cities. The new facility, which will replace the Richland clinic, will be staffed by 231 full-time employees & begin an 18-to-24-month construction phase.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Franklin County disputes funding for the Columbia Valley Center for Recovery — scheduled to open May 1 — as officials question how uninsured bills will be paid. Sheriff Jim Raymond and county administrators aim to secure an operating agreement so that everyone in crisis is assisted.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • The U.S. Department of Energy began major infrastructure upgrades in Hanford Site’s 200 West Area to prepare for large-scale treatment and retrieval of radioactive+chemical tank waste. Contractors are upgrading utilities+workspaces after years of tank waste retrieval in 200 East to ready the site for cleanup.  NBC Tri-Cities
