ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Pasco Fire crews, with help from Franklin County Fire District 3 and Kennewick responders, extinguished a commercial building fire on North 3rd Ave on Sunday night around 9:49 p.m.—the 20-minute effort limited damage to the building’s door area and interior with no injuries reported.  610 KONA

CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday evening, Richland Police responded to a call near Duportail and Riverside Ave when a man with stab wounds to his head and face was taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center and identified his attacker—who had minor injuries and was later arrested and is now held in Benton County Jail.  610 KONA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hundreds of students gathered at Columbia Park in Kennewick on Tuesday, April 29 for the annual Salmon Summit hosted by the Benton Conservation District—where they released baby salmon to help safeguard wild populations and learn about nature. The event provided a hands-on lesson in conservation as young participants experienced the local life cycle of salmon.  KEPR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new bill to cut litter was proposed by State Representative Mark Klicker and landed on Governor Bob Ferguson's desk Sunday—it raises fines from $50 to $125 per cubic foot and adds a $93 fee for littering on state highways. The law also sets new rules for plastic bags, and the governor will decide on its future in the next 20 days.  FOX 41 Yakima
  • House Bill 1263 passed unanimously on April 29 and now awaits the Governor's signature; it will raise litter fines and modify rules for reusable plastic bags (the bill now awaits final approval).  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Franklin County sheriff Jim Raymond defied a court order (signed by Judge Pro-Tem Jennifer Azure) to transfer control of the jail and courthouse after commissioners set up the new Department of Corrections, and county officials filed an injunction on Wednesday to enforce the order. Raymond said he would review the order but did not plan to follow it, and the legal dispute remains unresolved.  KEPR
  • Sandra Haynes, chancellor for WSU Tri-Cities, will serve as interim leader of WSU Vancouver starting June 1 when the outgoing chancellor retires—she will also co-chair the committee that will search for a permanent leader this fall—ensuring a smooth leadership transition.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business
