ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday morning, a crash on Gage Boulevard in Kennewick killed a pedestrian—Kennewick Police said the crash occurred between Louisiana Street and Grandridge Boulevard, temporarily closing the road while investigators continue their work.  FOX 41 Yakima

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Chick-fil-A will open in Kennewick on Thursday, June 19th at its new location on Canal Dr. + Columbia Center Blvd, marking the chain’s first entry in the Tri-Cities. Many locals expect a busy start + the new restaurant will boost area dining.  KFLD

CRIME NEWS

  • A 36-year-old Washington State Patrol trooper will face charges for a fatal crash in Richland that occurred on March 1 when her Kia hit a motorcycle, killing 20-year-old Jhoser Sanchez—investigators found she had a 0.17% blood alcohol level and spent nearly four hours at a local bar before the incident.  KEPR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Families gathered at Kurtzman Park (in Pasco) for a Juneteenth celebration with parades, food and music that honored freedom and shared history. Many government offices and some businesses closed today while additional events (a free skate party on June 19th and a gospel celebration on June 22nd) will further mark the holiday.  610 KONA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pasco School District began its Summer Meals Program yesterday to provide hot breakfasts and lunches to hundreds of students during summer break. The USDA-funded program sources fresh fruits and vegetables (supporting local growers) and will serve several school sites until mid-August.  FOX 41 Yakima

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Energy announced it is expanding the Hanford environmental landfill after funding issues nearly triggered worker layoffs – workers will soon build a new super cell to add about 2.8 million cubic yards of disposal capacity to support cleanup through 2040.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business

HEALTH NEWS

  • A UCLA study found that COVID patients who are not vaccinated have a higher risk of severe kidney damage that may require dialysis and increase the risk of death—unvaccinated patients were nearly three times as likely to die compared with those vaccinated. Researchers reviewed hospital data from 3,500 patients admitted from March 2020 to March 2022.  FOX 41 Yakima
