COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Barnes & Noble in Kennewick partnered with Mighty Meow Kitten Rescue last weekend to donate 10% of all sales during a book fair that let visitors meet kittens available for adoption. Linn Serven, the nonprofit’s treasurer, said the group rescued over 200 kittens this year and encourages community members to foster cats, with the next event set for August 23-24.  NBC Tri-Cities

CRIME NEWS

  • West Richland police arrested a suspect—armed with a chainsaw—during a domestic assault on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. after he threatened to kill a victim and engaged in a brief standoff that required help from the Benton County Sheriff's Office.  610 KONA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tri-Cities unemployment ticked up in May with Benton County adding 249 unemployed workers and Franklin County showing a small rise — shifts largely came from the agricultural sector adding jobs while manufacturing, financial services, professional services and leisure and hospitality lost positions — the region’s total labor force reached 143,085 with 6,574 filing for benefits.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Tri-Cities branch of Washington State University announced a new Brewing Certificate Program for aspiring brewers that offers a year-long course with 12 online classes and two weekend brewing camps—space is limited for the inaugural class starting in September with a 40% early-enrollment discount reducing the cost to about $3,000.  Apple Valley News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Advocates in Washington warned that expanding the H-2A visa program could worsen wage theft and poor housing for migrant farmworkers as farms rely more on temporary labor, with recent cases in Richland raising concerns about employer abuses. Lawmakers such as Rep. Newhouse and Rep. Lofgren will consider the Farm Workforce Modernization Act to ease farmers' burdens and boost protections for workers.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business
  • Today, the Pasco City Council will choose finalists for the City Manager position during a special meeting. The decision follows a recruitment process that began in February when Dave Zabell became interim manager—GMP Consultants led candidate screenings and national outreach with final interviews planned for later in July.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Franklin County reminded residents in unincorporated areas that fireworks, including ground spinners and aerial rockets, are banned ahead of the 4th of July to prevent fires and injuries. County officials said residents unsure of their area's status should call (509-547-9306) for clarification and recommended attending professional displays at local events like Gesa Stadium and River of Fire at Columbia Park.  FOX 41 Yakima
