CRIME NEWS

  • A Yakima man, Zachary Schwartz, pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and assault charges in Franklin County Superior Court on Tuesday for a drunk driving crash that killed a Pasco woman and her two children on December 27 on I-182 after he drove the wrong way—he was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison.  Apple Valley News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Children's Reading Foundation of the Mid-Columbia received a $12,000 grant from Battelle to fund its summer program 'Read Up Stop the Summer Slide'—which distributed 10,000 free books to children in Benton and Franklin counties and will offer free school supplies at a back-to-school event on August 18.  KEPR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Eastern Washington skies offer a clear view of the Perseid meteor shower peaking tonight, with up to 60 meteors per hour visible from dark-sky locations. Stargazers are advised to visit areas like Badger Mountain for the best viewing experience — a tip that will help them catch this natural show.  KFLD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pasco Public Facilities District is seeking a branding consultant for its new aquatics center scheduled to open next spring; proposals are due by 3 p.m. Aug. 28—this facility has a $40 million budget funded by a sales tax increase and will serve Pasco and the Tri-Cities region.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new veterans outpatient clinic is planned in the Tri-Cities area with $48.2 million federal funding from the PACT Act, announced by Rep. Dan Newhouse. The facility will serve 16,000 to 20,000 veterans who have limited healthcare options, though its location and groundbreaking date are still pending.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Today Congressman Dan Newhouse announced over $48 million in funding for a new outpatient veterans clinic in Tri-Cities that will serve over 16,000 local veterans—site selection is pending—and the facility will offer modern care so veterans need not travel to Walla Walla or Spokane.  KFLD
