COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ricky is a resilient black kitten who arrived at Tri-Cities Animal Services in Pasco on August 19 and has grown into a healthy 2 pound fighter with current vaccines, neutered and microchipped — he is ready for adoption for a $50 fee. The tiny survivor, now nearly 2 months old, awaits a forever home at the shelter.  KFLD

CRIME NEWS

  • A student at Desert Hills Middle School claimed to have a gun, which led Kennewick Police to investigate on Friday—officials later said they found no firearm and confirmed the student had no access to weapons.  NBC Tri-Cities

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fiery Foods Festival 2025 kicks off today at Pasco’s Peanut Park with free admission from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.—the event will showcase local restaurant specials, eating competitions including a Wingstop contest, a kids’ zone and live music from over 50 vendors.  NBC Tri-Cities

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Richland School District is beginning the new school year with monthly drills covering five emergency scenarios - the drills help staff and students learn what to do during severe weather, fires, and security threats while ParentSquare sends updates to families. Officials stressed that parents should not call or pick up students during an emergency until the all-clear is given.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Kennewick School District is reviewing a social media comment—made by a Chinook educator—that referenced Mark Twain after the murder of Charlie Kirk at a Turning Point event in Utah. The district said it received many reports from concerned parents and is following clear procedures to address the incident.  610 KONA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Political leaders in Washington worry that alleged safety concerns might halt the Waste Treatment Plant's move from cold testing to full-scale nuclear waste treatment. Washington Ecology said there is no evidence of safety issues — Governor Ferguson warned he will act if DOE stops the plant from moving forward by the October 15 deadline.  KEPR
  • The Hanford Vitrification Plant faces an uncertain future as the DOE may withdraw its support and Governor Ferguson held a press conference on September 12 to promise legal action if the deal is broken. The plant is set to go online on October 15 and state leaders are preparing for all outcomes—ensuring the federal agreement is honored.  FOX 41 Yakima

HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC and state health officials are investigating a Salmonella outbreak linked to home-delivered meals recalled by Metabolic Meals with a product date of July 28th. Sixteen people in 10 states have become ill — including one in Washington — and consumers are urged to remove these meals from their homes.  KFLD
  • The American Red Cross opened a new blood and platelet donation center in Kennewick at 7202 West Deschutes Avenue, replacing its longtime Richland facility after more than two decades. The modern center consolidates blood collection, first aid training & disaster response under one roof as part of a national plan to attract younger donors and enhance outreach to Latino and Black communities.  Apple Valley News Now
