COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, Sept. 20, the 37th annual Mid-Columbia Duck Race will take place in Kennewick along the Columbia River—up to 25,000 rubber ducks will race a 150-foot course to raise funds for local Rotary clubs. Tickets cost $10 and the prize pool includes a 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross with 55 additional awards.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Richland School District and the Tri-Cities Youth Suicide Prevention Coalition are hosting the 10th Annual Take Strides Walk on Wednesday, September 24 to raise youth awareness among students and families. The event will start with a pre-walk at Fran Rish Stadium at 3:30 p.m., followed by a band-led walk at 5:00 p.m. and conclude with a community program at John Dam Plaza before returning to the stadium around 7:00 p.m.  FOX 41 Yakima

  • Pasco School District #1 is marking Hispanic Heritage Month by honoring Dr. Ellen Ochoa— the first Latina woman to travel to space and namesake of a local middle school— with a new Barbie Inspiring Women doll that aims to encourage girls in STEM.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Bergstrom Aircraft will host a free aviation career night on October 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. for Tri-City high school students and their parents at its Pasco facility—students will tour aircraft, meet aviation professionals and learn about career opportunities in the growing industry.  Apple Valley News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Workers with H2C transferred over 430,000 gallons of waste from an old single-shell tank to a new double-shell tank at Hanford as part of cleanup efforts. The waste will be processed at the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant by Oct. 15—while federal officials, lawmakers and tribal leaders raised questions about potential changes to the long-standing cleanup plan.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • About 3,500 state and community college workers ratified their contract this week (they missed a 3 percent pay bump in July) and will ask the legislature in January for retroactive pay while the governor’s budget director reviews the costs.  610 KONA
  • The Pasco City Council read a proclamation to honor Charlie Kirk after his recent passing, with Mayor David Milne explaining the decision came from his admiration for Kirk's free speech support. The council also urged residents to remember victims of gun violence — emphasizing respectful conversations amid difficult times.  Apple Valley News Now
  • On Tuesday, Tri-Cities Airport held a federally mandated emergency training exercise simulating a drone-caused plane crash; more than 70 agencies participated (including firefighters, police, the FAA, TSA and the Port of Pasco) while 70 Tri-Tech students acted as mock crash victims (with realistic makeup).  Apple Valley News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Seattle Children’s Hospital will lay off 154 workers from its operations including some at the pediatric clinic in Kennewick starting November 15—though the clinic will remain open. The cuts amount to 1.5% of the workforce and come as the hospital faces lower state and federal funding.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business
  • A study found that only 55% of pregnant women with epilepsy consulted a neurologist before delivery, which may lead to unsafe medication use and higher risks for birth defects—women who saw a neurologist were more likely to stay on safe drugs and not stop their treatment during pregnancy.  FOX 41 Yakima

  • The Tri-Cities Home Consortium expanded its Home Ownership Assistance Program to offer low-income families in Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland up to 20% of a home’s purchase price and a maximum of $50,000 in down payment help — a change made in response to rising home costs and limited affordable options in the market.  Apple Valley News Now

  • The Tri-Cities Ironman race will take place this Sunday with a swim starting just before 6:30 a.m.—a 56-mile bike course will cause delays on George Washington Way while public safety teams and shuttle services manage traffic.  KEPR
