BUSINESS NEWS

  • Avelo Airlines will stop flights at Tri-Cities Airport after October 20 as it ends its West Coast service — passengers with tickets booked past that date should contact the airline for options. Alaska Airlines will start service to Hollywood Burbank on October 26 — Breeze Airways will debut nonstop flights from Pasco to Burbank with a direct option to Provo starting in March 2026.  Apple Valley News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that beef prices rose nearly 14% compared to August — prompting local consumers to choose chicken as retailers noted a shift in buying habits. Brazilian beef now faces a 76% tariff and USDA restrictions on Mexican cattle due to screwworm parasite concerns — adding to the shortage in local markets.  FOX 41 Yakima
  • The Port of Pasco approved a letter of intent for a company to buy a 42-acre lot at the Reimann Industrial Center for $6.3 million and gave the buyer a 90-day window to complete the sale. The port will not consider other offers and will keep the buyer’s identity confidential—hoping the project will boost economic development.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Columbia Basin College recorded an unofficial count of 8,234 students on its Pasco and Richland campuses as of Sept. 24, marking 465 more students than fall 2024. The college also reported a higher average course load per student and an 8.7% rise in full-time enrollment with plans to expand program offerings.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business

  • Washington residents brace for winter as forecasters predict colder weather and the potential for measurable snowfall while Pasco is expected to see frost on October 4 — gardeners are advised to cover plants to protect crops.  KFLD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Franklin County Commissioners announced today they will not renew the human services contract with Benton County effective September 30 — a decision made after Benton County proposed a 20% increase for a homelessness grant deemed unsustainable — and the county will transfer some services to the Department of Commerce while funding veterans programs separately.  NBC Tri-Cities

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers found that Medicare patients in ERs at hospitals bought by private equity firms experienced a 13% higher death rate with seven more deaths per 10,000 visits. The study said that staffing cuts and salary reductions—used to boost profits—likely lowered care capacity.  FOX 41 Yakima
  • Health First Urgent Care in Richland and Pasco agreed to pay $2,807,729 as part of a settlement for overbilling—according to the Eastern District of Washington United States Attorney.  NBC Tri-Cities
