COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mirror Ministries will host its third annual Candy Land Run on November 1 on Candy Mountain in Richland to raise funds for local survivors of sex trafficking. Participants can choose a mile fun run, a 5K or a 10K and those registering before October 12 will receive a commemorative T-shirt (gingerbread design) to support essential services.  FOX 41 Yakima

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Patrick Connor from the NFIB said that Washington’s biggest tax hike will make small businesses lose more jobs as it rolls out over the next 15 months—businesses may cut hours and stop hiring to save money. He noted that these new taxes come as small companies already struggle with a weak economy.  610 KONA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Dan Newhouse met with hemp farmers Friday to ask why many Central Washington farmers are choosing hemp instead of hops and apples — the meeting comes as lawmakers review the Ag Bill.  Apple Valley News Now
  • WA Commerce awarded $5.7M for three public infrastructure projects in Benton, Richland and Pasco—Benton received $1.7M to repair 8,000 linear feet of sewer line, Richland was given $500K for wastewater plant upgrades and Pasco got $3.5M for demolishing the old underpass below the Lewis Street overpass. The demolition in Pasco is one of the final tasks in a project that has been underway since August 2021.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business
  • In Kennewick, Washington, Hunger Free Washington reported that SNAP benefits for 900,000 people remain normal for October while a continued shutdown may delay new emergency food orders and deplete WIC funds—threatening operations at Tri-Cities Food Bank.  FOX 41 Yakima

HEALTH NEWS

  • Fred Meyer and QFC are recalling Basil Pesto Bowtie Salad and Smoked Mozzarella Penne Salad from their deli counters because of a possible Listeria risk; customers are asked to return products sold (Basil Pesto from September 6 through October 2 and Smoked Mozzarella from August 29 through October 2) for a full refund. The recall follows a nationwide alert with 20 reported illnesses, 19 hospitalizations, and 4 deaths, though no cases have been reported locally.  KFLD
  • Columbia Valley Center for Recovery in Kennewick has been planned for seven years by the Benton-Franklin Recovery Coalition and will open by April as the Tri-Cities' first inpatient drug treatment center, offering medical detox & recovery housing services. The nonprofit facility will let local patients get treatment close to home without needing to travel long distances.  Apple Valley News Now
