COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lutheran Community Services Northwest will consolidate its two Kennewick offices and move into a 38,000-square-foot space at 7011 W. Canal Drive in August 2026 – a building that formerly housed an Amazon call center to better support youth in crisis. Renovations will start in November pending permits as the nonprofit seeks community support to fund a trauma-informed design that enhances services for staff and clients.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Susan Mendenhall, owner of IHOP’s Kennewick and Pasco locations, received the 2024 Franchisee of the Year Award at a global conference in California—she became the first franchisee to win the honor three times. Company president Lawrence Kim praised her leadership and dedication to creating a welcoming dining experience.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business

CRIME NEWS

  • A study published on October 13 found that multitasking lowered the ability to detect phishing scams as participants struggled with spotting fraudulent emails, and professor Jinglu Jiang said that timely nudges in email notifications improved detection performance—helping users to refocus when overwhelmed by multiple tasks.  FOX 41 Yakima

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Mid-Columbia Symphony is reducing its season to three concerts—shifting focus to sustainability and diverse funding—as it works to secure future financial stability. The season will include a Halloween concert with a murder mystery element, a Christmas concert with the Mid-Columbia Mastersingers, and a spring concert featuring Young Artist Competition winners.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business
  • The National Retail Federation projects record $13.1 billion Halloween spending as Americans plan ghost tours, escape rooms and haunted hotels for spooky thrills. Local residents may also find similar haunted attractions and themed events in the area—adding new ways to enjoy fall.  FOX 41 Yakima

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, about 60 employees were furloughed on Oct 1 amid a federal shutdown and a budget deadlock. Lab leaders said they will hire staff for key research areas—while Congress continues to debate funding.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business
  • Washington State Patrol has launched the One More Stop initiative to remove impaired, distracted and aggressive drivers in honor of fallen Trooper Christopher Gadd, who died on March 2nd, 2024 after being struck by an impaired driver. Emphasis patrols from September 26th–28th arrested 4 DUI drivers, contacted 40 aggressive drivers and observed 16 distracted drivers as part of the ongoing effort to keep roads safe.  NBC Tri-Cities

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation received a $10K Local Heroes Grant Award from the Gesa Community Foundation—supporting 25 nurses with a 12‑week oncology training program that follows national standards from the Oncology Nursing Society and other accrediting bodies.  FOX 41 Yakima

  • City leaders, community organizations, and residents celebrated the ribbon cutting of Tierra Vida III this afternoon — a new housing development in Pasco that will add 120 affordable units funded partly by a $2 million CHIP grant and local partnerships.  KEPR
