COMMUNITY NEWS

  • PASCO’s Benton Franklin Fair Association donated $2,852—enough for 8,556 meals—from opening day ticket sales on November 3, according to a release that highlighted the fair’s commitment to helping those in need.  FOX 41 Yakima

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Columbia Ability Alliance will launch its Ally program with two free one hour workshops on creating accessible workplaces—covering legal tips, financial incentives and ADA compliance. CEO Michael Novakovich said the training could help employers achieve better financial performance and higher retention.  KEPR
  • Port of Benton granted Atlas Agro a six-month extension—critical for the project—to secure a 320-megawatt power connection with Bonneville Power Administration for a planned green fertilizer plant on 150 acres of former Hanford Site land. The $1.2 to $1.5 billion project will create over 235 full-time jobs and hundreds of construction roles and may begin construction next summer if the power deal is finalized.  Apple Valley News Now

  • Sage Crest Elementary launched the Owl Observer newspaper club on November 3rd to give students hands-on experience in reporting and writing—aiming to prepare them for future careers in journalism.  Apple Valley News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Tri-Cities Airport is nearly finished with its Runway 12-30 shift set to complete on November 14. Airport Director Buck Taft said the project—including upgrades to baggage systems, jet bridges and a rental car center—will improve airline flexibility and reduce delays.  Apple Valley News Now
  • The Washington State Department of Ecology is developing a voluntary Drought Insurance Program that will let farmers lease water during dry periods to help avoid irrigation shutoffs in the mid-Columbia region—this program is based on a 2008 study and is open for feedback from key stakeholders. Guidelines will be refined over the next year before the next major drought strains water supplies.  Apple Valley News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA said that most young children should not use prescription fluoride tablets because they can stain teeth and might affect gut health — they are recommended only for those who do not get enough fluoride from water or food.  FOX 41 Yakima
